My father.

The answer given by seniors Madyson Koerner and Megan Koenigsman.  The question? Who has been the biggest influence on your basketball career?

“I started playing basketball in kindergarten or 1st grade,” said Koerner, “My dad has coached me my whole life and we go to the gym together even today.”

Both Koerner and Koenigsman hit a milestone this year.  Each scored over 1000 points during her high school career.  The fans went wild. Within those elated fans were the proud fathers of those senior girls.  Both girls attribute their success to their fathers, who have been their biggest fans since they were little.  Koenigsman hit 1000 points first in the home game against Abilene on January 27.

“My dad has been my coach since I was little and taught me everything I know about the sport. He’s a big part of the reason I love it [the game] so much,” said Koenigsman.

Koerner made it to the feat during the first substate game against Phillipsburg at Al Billinger fieldhouse on February 27.  Exactly one month after her teammate.  Koerner became just the fifth TMP-Marian Monarch girl to make it over 1000 points.  She joins the prestigious list behind her teammate Koenigsman, Rachel Jacobs ’12, Kaylee Hoffman ’10, and Lori Flax ’86.

“I did not even know that the 1000 point club was a thing until Megan got it earlier in the season,” said Koerner.

The highlight of each girls career, however, was making it to state last year and placing third.  Koenigsman and Koerner, along with teammates, are headed back to the big dance this week.  The Lady Monarchs play Wichita Independent at Hutchinson Community College at 6:30 PM.
