The Thomas More Prep Marian girls basketball team made it to state and played their first game on Wednesday March 8, 2017. All the TMP fans piled in to cheer on the Lady Monarchs in Hutchinson, Kansas.   The girls snagged a third place finish, and Thomas More Prep Marian high school received an award for outstanding sportsmanship.

128 high school teams participating in KSHSAA State Basketball Tournaments could qualify for the award. The schools receiving a plaque and medals for the 3A Girls Division, in addition to Thomas More Prep, were Cheney, Hugoton, as well as Seneca- Nemaha Central.

“I am very proud but just as proud as I would be for any other award,” said Principal Chad Meitner, “Getting this award was very important because, as a school that values treating each other well, the sportsmanship award is a symbol that we show this. We have our downs but we must be doing something right.”

Athletic Director Troy Schulte attributes a lot of the award on the high school fans.

“It’s a nice recognition for our fans and student body,” said Schulte, “It puts our school in a good light all around the state. Although a lot of the credit goes to our band and cheerleading.”

Said simply by senior Katelyn Zimmerman, who won the KSHSAA senior sportsmanship award,“Win with character and lose with dignity.”
