The Lady Monarchs came out of the state tournament with third place after a long week battling their way to the semifinals.

During the first game of the tournament, the Lady Monarchs started with a lead against Wichita Independent. In just the first quarter, they were up 11-6, and the Lady Monarchs continued to run away with the lead with 52-21 at the end of the third quarter. By the end of the fourth quarter, the Lady Monarchs dominated, winning the first game 61-29.

The second game in the tournament against Cheney, however, was not as easy. The Lady Monarchs started with a 10-2 lead, but was tied up with the Lady Cardinals by the end of the first quarter at 12-12. By halftime, the Lady Monarchs were beginning to lag behind at 16-22. The game became a toss up during the third quarter when the Lady Monarchs tied it 31-31, but Cheney regained the lead at the end of the third quarter at 34-36. Struggling to catch up to Cheney, the Lady Monarchs fell to the Lady Cardinals, ending the game at 43-54, making it only the second loss this season for the team.

After losing in the semifinals, the Lady Monarchs were determined to come out with third place in the state tournament.  The Lady Monarchs bounced back from their previous loss, and started off the game against Seneca-Nemaha Central with a lead of 11-10 after the first quarter.  They began to fall short during the 2nd quarter after Nemaha Central had a six point spurt, but were quick to recover by halftime with a lead of 31-27. The third and fourth quarters were nail biters as the Lady Monarchs held a short lead over Nemaha Central. The Lady Monarchs won their last game of the season 63-57.

After accepting their medals with tears of joy and sadness, the Lady Monarchs topped off their season with third in the tournament and a final Monarch victory for some of the senior players.

“I was so proud of the team and what we did together this year,” said senior Deonna Wellbrock, “but I was also sad because it was the last game I would play with the girls I have played with since fourth grade.”
